Written by The Evidence Base

Taking place on May 5, 2024 in Atlanta, US, and co-located at ISPOR 2024, the ISPOR Patient-Centered Research Summit 2024 provides a forum for the discussion around patient engagement in evidence generation and healthcare decision-making.

The one-day ISPOR Patient-Centered Research Summit 2024 focuses on the theme ‘Advancing Patient-Centered Research’. The summit features four sessions led by experts, covering topics such as patient-centered outcomes, measurement of patient engagement impact, innovative research methods, and addressing challenges in advancing patient-centered research.

Attendees will gain insights into differentiating traditional and patient-centered evidence generation approaches, exploring established and emerging methods, and discussing standards for assessing patient engagement effectiveness. The summit provides a global platform to share developments, case examples, and strategies, strengthening the impact of patient engagement in evidence generation and healthcare decision-making processes.

Session 1: The Power of Patient Voices: Elevating Patient-Centered Outcomes in Research

Moderated by Michael Ward (Alliance for Aging Research, Washington, DC, US), the first session will focus on assessing the current status and impact of patient-centered outcomes research (PCOR) in healthcare decision-making and innovation development. Speakers Dawn P Richards (Clinical Trials Ontario, Toronto, ON, Canada) and Eva Maria Ruiz de Castilla (Latin America Patients Academy, Miami, FL, US) will explore the PCOR landscape, define authentic patient-centeredness, and identify efforts needed to better capture and leverage patient and caregiver values.

Session 2: Making a Difference: Identifying Best Practices to Measure the Impact of Patient Engagement

This session focuses on measuring engagement attributes and achievements beyond ‘how-to’ engagement. Pru Etcheverry (Advocacy Answers New Zealand, Auckland, New Zealand) will be joined by Hayley Chapman (PFMD, Toronto, ON, Canada), Mabel Crescioni (PCORI, Washington, DC, US), and Beyza Klein (Novartis, Basel, Switzerland) to explore intricacies in measuring quality, quantity, impact, and overall value of patient engagement in research or care, emphasizing evidence gathering reflecting patient needs. They will discuss establishing standards to enhance field credibility and measure impact on clinical practices and healthcare policies.

Session 3: Patient-Centered Methods: Accomplishments, Innovations, and the Future

Axel Mühlbacher (Hochschule Neubrandenburg, Neubrandenburg, Germany) will lead this session, exploring patient-centered research methods’ fundamentals and best practices, and focusing on preferred outcomes that matter to patients and caregivers. Joined by speakers Celina Gorre (WomenHeart, Washington, DC, US) and Elisabeth Oehrlein (Applied Patient Experience, LLC, Washington, DC, US), they will address questions about establishing best methods, showcase case examples and recent innovations, as well as discuss the future of patient-centered methods and the actions required to fulfill PCOR’s promise.

Session 4: Advancing Patient-Centered Research: Seizing Opportunities and Addressing Challenges

Integrating insights from earlier discussions, Session 4 will map out future priorities and actionable steps in patient-centered research. Eleanor Perfetto (University of Maryland, Baltimore, MD, US) will be joined by Kenneth Mendez (Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, Arlington, VA, US) to discuss targeting specific methodological needs to bolster scientific rigor and credibility. They will also explore strategies to advance best practices in patient engagement and impact measurement, aiming to uplift patient-centered research.
