The International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR) has published its much anticipated Top 10 Health Economics and Outcomes Research (HEOR) Trends Report, marking the fifth edition of this biennial publication. Led by ISPOR’s Health Science Policy Council and Chief Science Officers, Richard Willke and Laura Pizzi, the report provides a comprehensive overview of pivotal trends influencing global healthcare decision-making.

The identified trends for 2024-2025 include:

  1. Real-World Evidence
  2. Drug Pricing
  3. Artificial Intelligence
  4. Fostering Innovation
  5. Health Equity
  6. Accelerated Drug Approvals
  7. Value Measurement
  8. Patient Centricity
  9. Precision Medicine
  10. Public Health

Real-World Evidence (RWE) retains its position as the top trend, having previously ranked #1 in the last 3 reports. This is unsurprising, with RWE continuing to gain momentum in healthcare decision-making, contributing to innovation and promoting collaboration among providers, life science researchers, biopharma, and healthcare companies.

Drug pricing claims the #2 spot, with a focus on the transformative impact of new incoming policies such as Joint Clinical Assessment in Europe and the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) in the United States, which will influence negotiations for Medicare drug prices. The report highlights the potential global impact, considering the historical role of US drug profits in funding innovation in new drug development.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) re-emerges as the #3 trend, reflecting its integration into daily life and its diverse applications in HEOR. A new addition to the list is #4, Fostering Innovation, emphasizing the delicate balance between incentivizing technological advancements and ensuring affordability.

Health Equity, appearing at #5, continues to gain prominence, having first surfaced in the previous report. The subsequent trends, including Accelerated Drug Approvals, Value Measurement, Patient Centricity, Precision Medicine, and Public Health, contribute essential insights to the dynamic healthcare landscape.

This fifth edition of the ISPOR report of top 10 HEOR trends is grounded in inputs from members and strategic curation by the Health Science Policy Council. The report not only identifies trends but also underscores the growing importance of HEOR in supporting healthcare stakeholders globally. As healthcare systems face increasing pressures, ISPOR’s members play a crucial role in providing invaluable data to inform and improve healthcare decisions for patients worldwide.
