Machine learning could aid accurate alcohol-associated hepatitis and acute cholangitis diagnoses

New research finds that machine learning algorithms can help healthcare staff distinguish between two similar conditions: alcohol-associated hepatitis and acute cholangitis. Emergency department and healthcare staff must frequently make quick diagnoses. Ensuring that the correct diagnosis is made, and consequently the subsequent treatment, is often vital. Problems can arise when two conditions have very similar symptoms. Acute cholangitis – a potentially life-threating bacterial infection – includes symptoms such as fever, jaundice, right upper quadrant pain and elevated liver enzymes.
