Written by The Innovation and Value Initiative

The 5th Annual IVI Methods Summit, taking place March 14, 2024 in Washington DC, USA, will aim to shape the conversation around the theme ‘The Future of Patient-Centered Health Technology Assessment’.

The Innovation and Value Initiative (IVI) has revealed details of the 5th Annual IVI Methods Summit, which aims to bridge the gap between theory and practice by exploring practical and actionable steps stakeholders can take to implement patient-centered HTA effectively. Attendees of the summit will have the opportunity to engage in thought-provoking discussions, explore patient-focused methodologies, network with thought leaders, and contribute to shaping the future landscape of HTA.

The summit aims to achieve the following objectives:

  • Explore future directions for patient-centered health technology assessment (HTA), including health equity and unique considerations for rare diseases.
  • Highlight advancements in patient-centered HTA methods and immediate areas for further research.
  • Explore what stakeholders can do to help put patient-centered HTA into practice.

Sessions and speakers

Over the day, the theme ‘The Future of Patient-Centered Health Technology Assessment’ will be explored over several sessions including:

>> The Patient and the Modeler as Friends, Not Foes

In the opening keynote, experts will discuss the intricate intersection of patient journey mapping and HTA methodologies. The session will underscore the significance of patient insights and collaborative approaches in shaping contemporary health research.

  • Moderator: Ilisa Halpern Paul, MPP, Senior Policy Advisor, Venable, LLP
  • Kistein Monkhouse, MPA, Founder, Patient Orator
  • Melanie Whittington, PhD, MS, Senior Fellow, CEVR, Tufts Medical Center
>> Putting Equity into Practice: Patient-Centered Methodologies & Frameworks

Building from IVI’s recent health equity reports, this session will highlight practical examples of how patients and researchers can partner to incorporate health equity into HTA and explore the research questions that need to come next.

  • Moderator: Ilisa Halpern Paul, MPP, Senior Policy Advisor, Venable, LLP
  • Sneha Dave, Founder & Executive Director, Generation Patient
  • Anton Avanceña, PhD, Assistant Professor of Health Outcomes, The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy

>> Is Real Option Value Really an Option for Today’s HTA?

Real option value (ROV) calculates the benefit patients and caregivers receive from treatments that extend life, giving patients the chance to benefit from future treatment advances. In this panel discussion, speakers will discuss whether this new method is ready to be put into practice, and what would it mean for people with life-threatening conditions.

  • Moderator: Rick Chapman, PhD, Chief Science Officer, Innovation and Value Initiative
  • Zubair Ansari, Executive Director, Cancer Support Community
  • Meng Li, PhD, Assistant Professor, CEVR, Tufts Medical Center
  • Jon Campbell, PhD, Chief Science Officer, National Pharmaceutical Council
>> Rare Disease, Unique Needs — Adapting HTA for True Patient Impact

In 2023, IVI and EveryLife Foundation convened a PCORI-funded project on methods to identify common patient-centered outcomes across rare diseases. In this panel dialogue, the speakers will ask what makes patient-centered HTA for rare disease different, and how can that inform HTA in general?

  • Moderator: Ilisa Halpern Paul, MPP, Senior Policy Advisor, Venable, LLP
  • Dionne Stalling, Executive Director, Rare And Black
  • Simu Thomas, PhD, Global Vice President & Head, HEOR and Global Medical Communications, Alexion, AstraZeneca Rare Disease
  • Annie Kennedy, Chief of Policy, Advocacy, and Patient Engagement, Everylife Foundation for Rare Diseases
>> Beyond Buzzwords: Making Patient-Centered HTA a Reality

This fireside chat will identify opportunities to make patient-centered HTA a reality

  • Moderator: Jason Spangler, MD, MPH, FACPM, Chief Executive Officer, Innovation and Value Initiative
  • Eberechukwu Onukwugha, PhD, Professor, University of Maryland, Baltimore
