A HTA body in all but name? How some think the CMS is quietly becoming a HTA body in the US

Peter Neumann and Sean Tunis of Tufts Medical Center argue in a new perspective published in the New England Journal of Medicine that the CMS is effectively serving as a health technology assessment (HTA) body.  With a nuanced and often-termed ‘fragmented’ healthcare system, in contrast to many developed countries, the US does not have a nationally implemented HTA body to assess novel health technologies and guide coverage and pricing decisions.
