A fourth edition of the US Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s (AHRQ; MD, USA) reference handbook on registries – detailing best practices regarding their design, operation, evaluation and data analysis – has been released. The first edition of the guide – entitled ‘Registries for Evaluating Patient Outcomes: A User's Guide’ – was released in 2007 and represents one of the most cited texts on patient registries. Second and third revisions of the guide, addressing emerging developments in registry methodologies, were released in 2010 and 2014 respectively.
