Patient and stakeholder engagement learnings: PREP-IT as a case study

Summary

Research supports growing affirmation of patient and stakeholder engagement as an integral tool and highlights the need for further guidance on patient and stakeholder engagement best practices, frameworks, roles and responsibilities. Even in environments where patient and stakeholder engagement is at the forefront, stakeholders may not self-identify as co-decision makers, may not be able to specifically identify their contributions, may be unsure of their role expectations and functions, or – more pointedly – may report their role as tokenistic. With concerted and intentional effort, however, authentic and impactful patient and stakeholder engagement is achievable.

This commentary presents a case example of patient and stakeholder engagement in a clinical trial and the results of a small stakeholder-experience evaluation.
